Thanks to everyone for your heartfelt sweet words and kind concerns about my troubling right elbow. I promise more yummy posts to reward you after my full recovery. But meanwhile, I shouldn’t keep you waiting with an empty stomach, right? So, what’s up for lunch? I got some rather “sinful” fries ready for you today. Wanna try?
Potato is always kids’ “best friend” and among adults as well. It’s also one of the first few recommended baby foods during the early stage of weaning. So don’t be surprised if babies know how to utter “potato” first before “papa” or “mama”. Hahaha! Just kidding!
Potato is so versatile in cooking that you can surely find a potato dish to placate your palate without much problem, even the pickiest eater. That’s the magic of potato! Although potato is full of carbohydrates and calories, it is not totally bad for health. It does have plenty of healthy benefits if you opt for a healthy cooking option and eat it in moderation.
I have been experimenting oven baked potatoes using various recipes. It turned out that this featured recipe was given the highest rating by my two “bosses”. The original recipe has been modified to suit my family’s liking, but I didn’t add minced garlic to toss and had excluded the usage of cornstarch. This was because burnt garlic during baking gave the potato a bitter taste, while cornstarch a floury taste.
These seasoned fries are so flavourful! The garlic smell is not too overpowering (even with garlic infused oil and garlic powder) and blends so well with mild paprika powder and fresh ground black pepper. Leaving the potato skin intact gives these fries a crispy outer layer while the interior remains soft when done. When I first handed a piece to my son to try out , I was a bit worried that he would reject it as he generally dislikes food spiced with black pepper. Besides that, it’s my first attempt to include paprika in my cooking. Surprisingly, he gobbled it up immediately and kept requesting for more as the temptation for these “golden babies” was just too irresistible! (In actual fact, I ate more as I was addicted to these fries too! LOL!)
I love making these oven baked fries as I hate seeing oil splattering in my kitchen. Apart from that, they are incredibly easy to make! Don’t expect these baked fries to be a 100% substitute for the real French fries. But it’s definitely a healthier choice for those potato lovers who want to avoid deep-frying fries.
If you have to deal with picky eater who is a fan of potato, then you got to make this little treat once in a while to let him/her have a good impression about you, and from thereon slowly gain his/her acceptance to any new healthy food you want to introduce in future. This trick always works for me! Why not give it a try!

I quickly jumped over when I saw the update “potatoes”… yes the kids love them, esp fried ones! Haha … This looks yummy but sure takes lots of hard work!
Tin: The plus point is they are not fried but baked!! A healthier choice for your kids! The steps are simpler than you thought. Give it a try. 😉

Kausami: I had baked sweet potatoes before. Yeah, all of them are yummy! 😉
Oh my!!! I definitely must try this. I feel so terrible everytime I eat fries knowing that it has been deep fried. I want to try your baked version.
Ivy: I used to eat lots of French fries when I was single but don’t why I never crave for them now. Maybe our taste buds will change when we grow old. I’m glad that I found this baked version. At least my son will get to enjoy fries in a healthy way. 😉
Yummy! I like baked potatoes!
LCOM: Yeah, healthy and yummy for our kids! 😉
Definitely think oven baked fries are better than deep frying and save me time to wipe the hob clean too 😉
Lee Mei: Yeah, I hate to do all the unnecessary cleaning jobs. 😉
Yumm…Oven baked fries are always my daughter’s fav afternoon tea after school.
Yours look sensational.
Wow! Looks like the type of fries served in some restaurants. Do they come out crispy?
The Sudden Cook: Hahaha! Thanks for your kind words. They are crisp but not equally good as compared to deep frying stuff. There are 2 things you can experiment to make the fries crisp – increase baking temperature to 240C and add some cornstarch to the seasonings as mentioned in the original recipe. Hope it helps! 😉
love the idea of oven-baked. less oily, healthier, and easier clean up =D
Noobcook: Yes, you’ve said it all! 😉
Hi food-4tots!
It’s such a great honor to have you gracing my blog! Thank you for your visit earlier and just for your info, I’ve taken the 1st step in (getting into) cooking mode, which is buying myself a bottle of Worcestershire sauce (it’s the last bottle on the shelf and yes, I’m still having problems pronouncing it!)
Btw, any tips on choosing an oven and etc? I want to get one since I stumbled upon so many wonderful baking recipes but again…like my cooking skills, my baking knowledge is KOSONG as well… sigh, sigh…
Anyway, wish me luck! 😛
Jenny (IAFTM): You have such a great blog. Keep it up! So glad that you have turned on your cooking mode. Once your baking mode is on, you willl have more fun!
For oven, it depends on your budget and space. I’m using a table top oven (Rowenta brand) for all my baking now. Built-in oven is still in my wishlist. Hehehe! Things you should consider are: reliability of the brand, quality of the oven, size of the oven (the bigger the better), function of the oven (best to have both grilling and baking functions). Oven with fan is a good choice. Hope it helps. Let me know if you have more queries. 😉
I love making chips and similar fries in oven as well. It is just healthy, effortless. I like your adding of the paprika too cause it is one of my favorites.
TasteHongKong: I just discovered the beauty of paprika. LOL! 😉
I love fried potatoes but I have to reduce my intake so that my waistline won’t expand further. 😉 I’ll definitely give your recipe a try though, it looks really delicious and I’m sure that it’s healthier than the fried version.
Piggy: Yes, definitely a better option for you. Hope you will love it. 😉
Sometimes simples recipes are the best. I make a version of these with a seasoning of equal parts cumin, coriander and chilli powder.
A Little Yumminess: Yeah, I totally agreed. Thanks for your sharing. Will try your version when my son is ready for chili powder. 😉
Believe they certainly more healthy than those done in the fast food chains.
Dora: Yes, you’re absolutely right! 😉
hi there, these fries are so yummy looking!! I too hate to deep-fry too much so these are perfect!
Tastes of Home: Thanks!! Yeah, they are definitely healthier too! 😉
I would enjoy this even as a snack 😀 Hope you are well. Please take care.
Mary Moh: Thanks for your kind concern!! 😉

This is excellent for my teenager at home!
Worldwindows: Hope your teenage will enjoy it. 😉
That looks like a great recipe for potatoes. There are so many uses for potatoes in daily cooking. This recipe seems like another great one. Thanks.
Plastic Lids: Do give it a try if you’re looking for a healthy version of fries. 😉
You don’t have to be a tot to want to eat these taters. Fries in any form are my weakness. 😀
Matt Kay: Do give it a try! 😉
Hi! May I know where I can buy Korsher salt in SG?
Mei Ling: I bought Korsher salt from MarketPlace (Cold Storage) at ION Orchard last time but couldn’t find it now. Recently, I found it sold at MarketPlace Raffles City. Hope it helps! 😉
[…] Oven Baked Fries (from Food 4 Tots) […]
hi there, i have been wanting to try this for my daughter. is it necessary to steam the potatoes first? wondering if i can omit the steaming step. ha ha.
Ting: The steaming process will help to cook the inner part of potatoes faster. After baking, these potato wedges will be crisp outside and soft inside. Without steaming, you may have problem to achieve this result. Hope it helps! 😉
