Steamed chicken with wolfberries and red dates

chicken, wolfberries, red dates, Chinese, steaming, kid, toddler, food for tots

This is a modified version of steamed herbal chicken adapted from Quick & Easy Hawkers’ Fair. I had omitted dang guai (chinese herb – 当归) and chinese shaoxing cooking wine.

Ingredients:
2 chicken whole legs
1 tbsp wolfberries (枸杞) (washed) – Add more if you like as it is a very nutritious (read this link for more details)
5 red dates (removed seeds)

Seasonings:
1 tbsp oyster sauce
½ tsp salt
1 tsp sesame oil
½ tbsp cornflour (diluted with 2 tbsp water)

Methods:

  1. Clean the chicken legs and pat dry. Remove bones and skins ( I asked the chicken seller to do it for me to save time). Trim the fat. Cut into 4 pieces.
  2. Marinate all ingredients with seasonings for at least 30 mins.
  3. Steam at high heat for 15-20 mins or until the chicken is cooked. Dish up and serve hot.
  4. If the chicken is dry, add 1 tsp fried garlic or shallot infused oil.

I just love the abundance of fruit in savory fall dishes. It really serves to add a distinct color, texture and flavor.

This looks wonderful! Chicken is such a staple at our house, I’m always looking for new ways to prepare it. The colors look amazing. And, since we brought our daughter home from China a couple years ago, we’ve been trying to integrate more Chinese meals into our family routine. This one looks great, and I can’t wait to try it. I think my daughter will like it too – with all the colors. Thanks for sharing.

Can 18mth old tots hv oyster sauce? if not, what can i use in replacement of this? I would like to try this dish.

  19. Food For Tots says:

Anonymous: Oyster sauce will be a bit too salty for your 18-mth old tot. Just replace the oyster sauce and salt with a dash of light soy sauce. If possible, try to get a premium brand soy sauce. 😉 If you have any other queries, u are always welcome to write to me at food4tots@yahoo.com. 😉

    • food-4tots says:

Jessie: Thanks for your kind feedback! So glad that it suits your family’s palate. It’s good to keep your dish as less salt as possible for your lil tot. 😉

  22. Mei Ling says:

Hi, I tried making this for dinner tonight. My hubby commented that this is the best homecooked food (cooked by me and maid) that he has ever eaten. I am so so pleased as this is the first time my hubby like my cooking. Thanks for sharing this recipe 🙂

  23. Deph says:

Hi! I am so glad to have found your website. It stirred up my cooking interest (which I never thought I would like to at all). 🙂 This steamed chicken dish is the most successful dish I have ever cooked! It’s so easy for a novice like me. It’s such a great booster that I tried your scrambled eggs with cauliflower dish after that. The resulting colour wasn’t really nice. But the taste is not too awful for a start. I hope it will taste better and look nice as I continue to cook. 🙂 I have already decided what other dishes to try out. Thanks for the wonderful website! 🙂

    • food-4tots says:

Deph: Thanks for dropping by and your encouraging words!! So glad that my recipe works for you. Looking forward to hearing more success stories from you. 😉

  24. Phoebii says:

    Hi

Just wanted to let you know that I tried this recipe and my hubby really liked it, me too! even my 3 yr old son love it! I will definitely cook this dish again 🙂

  25. Jeslyn says:

HI, for the cornflour diluted with water, do i pour over the chicken or do i rub onto the chicken?

  26. Fiona says:

Hi, u said u had omitted dang guai and cooking wine, so does that mean I don’t need them?

    • food-4tots says:

Fiona: If you’re preparing this dish for a toddler, then it is better to omit them. Otherwise, you’re free to use. Their addition can enhance the flavour of this dish. 🙂

  27. Evie says:

If I want to add some dang guai, how many grams of it should I use? What are the medical properties of dang guai? I am trying this today, thanks.

  28. Evelyn says:

Hi, base on your recipe, how many grams was the chicken that you used here? If my portion of chicken is more than yours, do I increase the amount of measurements for the marinate in proportion?
Thanks, can’t wait to cook this tomorrow

    • food-4tots says:

Evelyn: Sorry, I didn’t measure the weight. The recipe is suitable for small to medium sized chicken whole legs. You can increase the measurement slightly if yours is larger.
